Distilling tap water

The distillation process itself

Distilling tap water

Postby noob distiller » Thu Jul 09, 2015 2:29 pm

Just a quick question
Been having probs last couple of runs when proofing down
I've used bottled water (17p bottled still water fm tesco) end product is hazy
Same with filtered tap water
Everything is perfect during run coming out crystal clear at an average of 93%
I'm running a t500, basic sugar wash,
Question is on distilling water in the t500
Has anyone on here done it just a little worried of melting the plastic on top of column
And is it the same as running normally ie cooling water around 55.c, do I need to remove saddles or just leave it set up as is?
Oh the water down here is hard (tastes crap too)
Cheers all :)

I am hoping for some clever people to come along soon.
I think the answer is an easier one. This is nothing to do with the water. Further I think distilled water would do just the same.

I think it is your cuts. I think there are fusel oils that are remaining in your finished alcohol which don't become obvious until you hit them with water.

One of the experienced chaps will explain it better, I also don't have a T500 so I cannot help with the process.

Fusel oils was my first thought too.

A common mistake and easy to make.

Make your cuts earlier by a few degrees. Don't try and all you can get out of a spirit run.

I also make generous cuts in the stripping run. Makes for a very clean product. I don't have to carbon filter either.
