And here may be a novel new age twist on things.
I can't do this due to freezer space.
But,for me it is the results that count, not how you get there.

Whilst poking about in an old cupboard I found lurking a couple of cans of beer kit from my brewing days some whille back, the bottom of the tins have started to bulge a touch and they are well past best before, I'm not keen on throwing away so would these still work, dates are november 13 and october 14?
I'm guessing new yeast will be needed, will bread yeast work or do I need a specific beer yeast?

I would pierce the cans outdoors, wearing safety specs.
And attempt to use them with bread yeast,lot's of it.
Bread yeast and Canned beer kits make terrible beer, but may make a decent spirit.

I wanted to make some beer to drink
If I got some propper yeast would these work or would it be more humane to line them up on my fence and let my 12 guage put them out of their missery?

I think they will make up. Might. Might be a bit tinny tasting.
Get some safale beer yeast. I sachet per tin. Safale 04 is a solid performer for brown beer.
If they are lager kits. Use the lager yeast.

Cheers, I have ordered a couple of sachets, I think I'll brew it to 6% so if it's crap there is a bit more to recover! I did a beer at just over 7% once and that was very good, not great the morning after.

That safale yeast is dynamite, got going really quickly and has kept a nice cap on the beer, I have an aquarium heater in both set at 24 degrees, will it alter when finished or will the cap remain? They both smell good and there is no activity in the cap that I can see.

24 is a a bit warm for beer(ale). 20 is better.
Net yeast is different.
The cap will settle down. Beer will be finished in 5 days, but benefits from being left on the yeast for for 2 weeks.
Are you bottling it?

The beer has been going for 5 days now, should I switch off the heaters, it's in my living romm so quite warm still, I can move to the workshop?
I was planning to put it in to 2L pop bottles with a bit of sugar as I don't have a presurised barrel.

Back in my beer kit brewing days, I suspect many years before yours, I used to use 2 litre pop bottles and a teaspoon of sugar, leave a few weeks and then feel obliged to drink the whole bottle after opening.

Robert, once a bottle is opened it starts to go bad so needs finishing, you know the rules....
Beer and wine are much like milk in this respect.

I use 2+2+2. 2 weeks @ 20. 2 weeks cool (racked off if bottling). 2 weeks conditioning @ 20c in bottles or kegs. If you want real ale effect use ½ teaspoon of sugar per beer bottle.

Hey Mash, can you help, the caps in both barrels are still floating and thick, does this mean they are still fermenting, I'll take a reading in the morning but they should be well done by now, I would think.
