Ok so did this lentil wash for the first time to find my PH was 7...... didn't have citric acid as such so added lots of squeezed tangerines and got it to 5 lol.
I have PH down for plant water.... could I have used this? I was a bit worried about introducing chemicals to something I was going to drink.

15 mins after adding yeast and it is literally bubbling like there is no tomorrow!!!!
I am going to try this as a wine just for fun..... just a sip or two then try it in my almost made still which I ordered the last of the parts for last night :)

Well.... still bubbling ( once every 10 mins maybe ) but according to the hydrometer its at nearly 13.5% :)
I boiled the lentils for one wash, and just put boiling water and let sit with the other 25 litre - both show identical % but the boiling lentils was a lot more messy.
Been 2 weeks now, but the temp hasn't been 30oC - more like 20.
Also one batch I adjusted the PH to 5.2ish and the other was 6.5 - again, so far no difference.
Really impressed so far with this recipe - much cheepness!

"much cheepness" indeed,it seems that you can use any old pulse that you have,it seems almost impossible not to get a good result.

Hi There, I want to do my first red lentil wash, can someone pls confirm what is the right recipe. I note that some people have used 21ltrs and 23ltrs with different amounts of sugar, lentils and yeast. My preferred fermenting amount is 23ltrs.

Put down 30 gallons of this wash with 48 pounds of sugar total and 6lbs. of lentils. The Lentils were pre-soaked in hot water.

I added some of both enzymes cause i had it and 2 oz of epson salts. Pitched Yeast and stirred air into at at 31C. 4 hours later the cap has formed and some foam is on the surface yeast is active.

Smells good and should end up with a 11 to 12% wash. keeping it on heat so...

We shall know in a week...

One of the joys of the lentil wash is that it is not an exact science or recipe.
This is more of a "This is what I have,this is what I will use."
The type of lentil being the first variable,-they all work.
I would advise no more than 5Kg sugar to 23 litres total wash,6Kg will probably work,why push it?
250g of lentils,-you could probably use half of that,if the bag has been opened already for some other use,and is not full.
For me,seeking a fast ferment,the yeast and temperature are the no compromise items.
I use aquarium heaters,set to 32°C,most of the time they are redundant,as the yeast create their own heat,often much,much higher.
I use 100g of standard (DRY) bread yeast for 24-25 litres of wash.
Again,here,you could halve the amount,with a slower ferment resulting.
My washes are usually done in 3 days.
But do beware the yeast monster head,which by the end of day 1,will be trying to climb out of a bucket that is almost full.
I use 3x25 litre buckets for a 50 litre wash,and after the initial yeast excitement,pour the third bucket into the other two and allow to finish.

I have this 30 gallons split in two 15 gallon fermenters... one dropped to 1.040 and the other to about 1.050 in 12 hours or so from a starting SG of 1.070 or there abouts. Its rocketing along
huge bubbles not something you would call Champagne bubbles by any means...

The smell is sweet and light almost heavenly.. I stirred em up again, for good measure even though they were rolling along.. I think this should be the last stir on this batch..

The Wash Report


Well it's been about 36 hours since i put this wash down...is Rocketing along and that may be an understatement...

The first 15 gallons:
15 gallons that started at 1.070 is now at 1.005 a .065 drop in 36 hours...

The second 15 gallons:

15 gallons that started at 1.070 is now at 1.015 a .055 drop in 36 hours...

Smells great still has a partial krausen or lentils floating on the top..

Hello just my two pence worth here. Ive tried the Lentil Wash several times but have reverted back to my original wash of 11 kgs sugar, 750 grams of malted wheat (nutrients) 1 tspn Epsom Salts and 100 grams of Allinson's bread Yeast. In my opinion seems like a better end product.

RunningMan ... what your describing is an Ace's Foolproof Neutral Wash... which i have run many times.... Can be made with malted barely or malted wheat... recipe is on AD and has been for years...

This is my first try at a Lentil Wash... so I am looking forward to running it as a 95 to 96abv product ... strip and then run it with a plated/packed hybrid system...

BTW one fermenter is now below 1.000 the other is a 1.005 this wash is fast 48 hours so far... will post about it again tomorrow morning...

Got me thinking?

I have just started a lentil, I was going to try a 'wheat' (stolen from chickens) to compare.

Now this ACE recipe appears - but does the wheat have to be malted?
