Correct SG?

Postby Copperhead » Sat Apr 21, 2012 2:41 pm

Afternoon folks,

I just did up a wash of 21 lt and 6 kg of sugar and my reading was 1091. Is this in the right area and what I can I expect it to ferment down to? I am using SS triple distilled yeast.

Cheers

There are some really handy SG calculators over at homedistiller where you can check OG/SG readings

http://homedistiller.org/sugar/wash-sugar/sg

According to them 6kg of sugar and 21 litres of water should be about 1094 so 1091 is pretty close :) Of course if your wash is warm when you take your OG then you have to correct for that as well

And here is a calculator for that.

http://www.brewersfriend.com/hydrometer-temp/

So if your wash was 29 degrees c when you took the OG reading that would be 1094 - exactly as the home distiller site suggested.

Depending on how well the ferment runs (temp, how much o2 is in the wash, what colour shirt you are wearing when you pitched the yeast) you should get down to between 996 and 990.

So the next calculation is (1094 - 992)/7.36 = 13.85% a.b.v. which is a nice sensible amount to get :)
