Strange Pub names.
We made a visit to Boston last week, very close the the cathedral...(which in fact it's not one, but a parish church) we came across this pub..

It's such a strange name, we later found out that the church is called the "Stump"...so is the pub the church & candle.??.
A few years back we had a pub in Stratford upon Avon called "The Slug & Lettuce" it now goes by the name "Bar Room Bar @ The Hole in the Wall" (just slips off the tongue, doesn't it!).
What ever happened to the old names?? times change I must be getting old.

I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Re: Strange Pub names.
Where I live there are a few pubs with local names completely different to there actual names.
We have one called The Prince Arther but it's know locally as "The Bug" no one knows why!!!
We have another called The Royal Oak but it's known locally as "Deaduns" rumours are a building at the back of it was one used to store body's as a morg.
There was also a pub long gone now called The Coasters, known locally as "The Ship" it eventually changed its name to The Ship :-)

There used to be one called "The Queens Head" at Bolney, the pub sign was a portrait of Freddy Mercury (before they changed the name and subsequently closed it down).........

Although I now live far down the South West I'm originally from the North, little market town called Brigg.
There is a pub there called The Dying Gladiator. Don't think there is another one in the whole country with the same name.

It's a great drinking game, and can be an icebreaker, although none of mine have yet become public (houses).
So the real ones remain interesting.

There's a few odd ones here.
The Post Office. Ma Edgertons. One Flew Over the Throstles Nest. Many more I forget.
Up by the Sellafield plant, the locals call the pub 'The Nuclear Arms'.

Re: Strange Pub names.
There is a pub where I used to live called the “Labour In Vain”.
Its sign depicted a couple of white women trying to ‘wash’ a little black boy.
Link to a blog story.
Probably hung there for a century or more before interfering Political Correctness do-gooders kicked up a stink and got it taken down.
Searching Google Images suggests it wasn't unique, there have been others which have all suffered the same fate.

We have one in Norwich called "The Murderers" it dates back to 1895.
Frank, the landlord was tried and convicted to hang for murdering his wife. However his sentence was commuted to life in prison following public outcry claiming he was provoked.
He died in 1905 whilst in prison.

I haven't driven up that way for a while now. But I thought they still had that sign/painting, as they got some press coverage when the PC crowd tried to say it depicted a black person. The article said about it being a child who just happens to be dirty, shooting the PC wankers down in as shower of their own shit......
Can't confirm this (no links etc), but they haven't got anywhere with complaints about the pub or village at Blackboys (which has only been in existence since the 14th century).....

I believe that sign was taken down from outside the pub but still displayed in one of the bars.
Haven't been in there in the last 25 years or driven past very often at all, so have no idea of its current whereabouts.
