I've just had to re-read this thread, memory must be getting shorter with age lol

I stripped my 3 washes first, then run them through 6 bubble cap plates for the spirit run, I found my hearts were all in a very narrow band of ABV but can't remember the numbers now, I also aged this lot in some SD French Oak no 4, it took on a nice colour from the oak but I'm not a big fan of dark rum, so I run it through the Essencia filter and made it back into White Rum, it made a lovely white rum, and unfortunately didn't last long :-(

I'm soon going to be running my Cacacha Rum, I've got a Cornie keg filled with strip, that was made from a coupe of washes that had 3 tins of golden syrup and two jars of mollasses in each, I'm going to run it through 3 x 4" plates on the spirit run, I'm looking forward to running with just 4" plates, I'm expecting a fast collection rate of maybe 3-4 litres an hour.

Google "distilling plates". It is an alternative to packing for larger columns.

Hi Everyone,

just another query :)

How many washes will I get out of the below molasses, based on a 25 ltr wash?

In the absence of another response, how long is your piece of string?
You could put 5 litres in your wash, or cut it with sugar, use less and by doing so dilute the resultant taste.
You need to know the sugar content of the molasses,(not stated in your link) to have some idea of the SG.
Maybe not very helpful, maybe someone else will come along shortly.

Robert.

@eattheliving: As EasyD said - not enough information. But that never stopped me before. I would start with a couple of liters of molasses and probably 3-4 Kg of white sugar per 25L fermentation tank. You will need to adjust SG up or down to an acceptable range. Then providing temp is right, pitch yeast.

The reason I suggested a lower start for molasses than EasyD is because you can always add more on the next run until you arrive at your ideal amount.

You should not require the addition of nutrients as the molasses will have heaps.

Word of caution: Your dealing with an animal grade product. It maybe perfect or it could be loaded with crap. Next time look online and/or into bakery and restaurant suppliers for human grade molasses. At least compare.

thanks for the response guy's.

I got the link from a post on here and thought it might be better vfm than buying 5 jars from Holland and Barrett.

Hi everyone. I want to try my first rum simply with molasses, sugar, and water. I want to do a small 1 gallon mash to begin with. Can someone tell me how much molasses and sugar i need for 1 gallon?

I would divide Rum John's post above by 5 and adjust as is suggests. Adjust down if in doubt. You won't go far wrong 8)

I always aim for about 1KG of sugar per 5 litres of wash, this gives roughly 9%-10% ABV

Buy one jar of molasses the take a look at the sugar content on the nutritional information label, it should be around 55-70gr per 100gr depending on the quality.

So if it's a 500gr jar with 60gr sugar per 100gr it's equivalent to 5 X 60, that's 300gr of sugar, so to that I would add 700gr sugar for 5 litres.

Or you could use two jars and 400gr of sugar if you wanted more flavour.

I just bought another 8 jars today, enough for two more washes before I start with another rum spirit run.
I'm going to buy one more section for my still so I will be using 4 X 4" plates this time, after this, I'll be done adding bubble plates, I don't see any need to use anymore.

6 or 8 plates are pointless, for flavoured spirit I will use 3 or 4 plates, after that I'll add a packed section for neutral.

I'm part way between this and the lazy rum wash described elsewhere in the same thread, while also giving credit to RumJohn's cachaca (golden syrup wash).

Any mix of molasses, golden syrup, demerara sugar, dunder from previous washes is going to make a white rum lover happy compared to shop bought stuff is my current thinking.

I like a very small amount of glycerol and vanilla in mine. A small amount of orange rind and a bit more vanilla will please Captain Morgan after as little as 2 weeks imo.
