Hey guys - I need to do a dark rum for a Pirate Party in a months time. I don't drink rum so I'm really in the dark on this one.
I'll have enough vodka by the end of the week but what essences / ageing etc would you suggest (in the UK by the way)
Cheers.
P.S. - anyone know where I can get a small barrel for say 5 litres

I\'ve just discovered Essencia Dark Jamaican Rum. Fruity and smells like Old Jamaican Chocolate. Gorgeous! Needs a couple of weeks to develop.

I\'ve only just started with flavourings but since rum\'s my tipple (Bundaberg), the first batch i made up was Aussie Rum. And it wasn\'t too bad.
However, it improved enormously when i read about the 10% rule on this Forum. By adding the requisite amount I\'m hard pressed now to tell the difference between my stuff and good old authentic Bundy.
Sheers.

10% rule ?? I've had a look in flavourings but can't see that in the title and a google site search produces too many results.
What is the 10% rule ?

Hi guys. I picked up on the \'rule\' somewhere in the threads archives on this site.
The advice was that if you add 10% of \'real\' stuff (in my case the famous Bundy)to your essence flavoured spirit the authentic flavours come to dominate the essences flavour.
I was sceptical but when I tried it myself (I\'ve got a couple of bottles left over from pre-distilling days) I was amazed at the results. Might not work for other flavours tho??

10% rule was mentioned on the main site:
http://www.stillsmart.co.uk/essences/essences/It does work if you\'re trying to emulate something in particular, providing that the essence and the original spirit are good enough for it to enhance them rather than just muddy the flavours.

Should be trying to make something better than the commercial stuff, rather than trying to emulate it,haha.Right thanks for letting us know.
