Free yeast!
I'm quite friendly with a few of the staff in my local Tesco & they have a bakery in the shop. Not many people use the service anymore apparently but if you tell them you want to try your hand at homemade bread & could you have some fresh yeast, they are allowed to cut some off the block for you free of charge.
I think there will be some kind of fair usage limit if you're in there every other day or asking for kilos of the stuff but if you just want a handful to try then you can, I know yeast isn't the most expensive commodity but I'm always down for a bit of free stuff!

Re: Free yeast!
I've read this before....we have a bakery in the village where I get mine..4oz for 20p...like you say it's not expensive.
Morrison sell fresh yeast 4 small foil wrapped ones for 50p.
