Bubble Cap Assembly & Glass MK2 and a bit

Postby Son of Opus 27 » Tue Jul 28, 2015 8:58 pm

Well having had a play with the single then the double bubble cap in the previous thread I have gone back to the start and built mk2 and a bit which will be detailed here.

The new setup has three bubble caps in the column and the drain height of each cap is adjustable to allow tweaking of the fluid level above the plates / caps.

The image below shows the components after machining excluding the M3 studding used to space the plates that can be seen in the later photos.

This is the first stage of the assembly with the bottom cups in place as well as the deflector to prevent the overflow going straight down the down comer below.

The next image shows the copper centre piece threaded onto the stainless drain the amount of this stainless centre projecting will set the depth of the fluid.

The next view shows the bottom ring in place and the first bubble cap assembled to the first plate. The bottom ring is trapped in the tri clamp joint when the still is assembled.

This image shows the stack of three assembled and complete prior to insertion in the tube. The glass tube is a new piece I sourced it measures 250mm long by 75mm diameter. I machined some new inserts for the top and bottom flanges to support / seal the new glass tube as well as longer studding.

This image shows the new cap assembly inserted in the sight tube in its final position.

Finally assembled to the rest of the still

And a close up of the caps in action running some waste alcohol as a test the wash was only about 7-8% but we were getting 92% out initially so not bad.

Thanks for looking

cheers
