Fresh Bakers Yeast From Morrisons

Postby Normski » Tue Jan 07, 2014 8:23 pm

Hi All

I recently saw some Fresh Bakers Yeast while shopping in Morrison’s.
And thought it looked interesting and it's cheap.
50p for 4 x 40g cubes. Ingredients are only yeast and water.

Today I put a molasses wash on and used some. I made a 500ml started with 15g sugar and a crushed 40g cube.
It was active very quickly. Within an hour of pitching there was plenty of activity. And by tonight a good inch krausen.
It’s a bit too early to say how the ferment will finish, but so far looks very promising.

As an AG brewer yeast is the most important part. I've got maybe 8 different ones in the fridge, I've collected it from bottles, swapped with other brewers, but this distilling malarkey that's another story.

Bog standard bakers yeast seems to be the one to use.. ??? as I'm a newbie to it all, it's taking me time to get my head around it. In actual fact yesterday was the first time I used bakers in a lentil wash...and it's going like a train ;)

Hope it turns out well Norm..

I've used fresh yeast before and it works well. The problem is that here it comes in one pound blocks and will die before I use it all. For sugar washes, I use what is cheap. For me, that is dry baker's yeast.

Day 3 and its down from 1078 to 1013.
Bubbles have slowed, Krausen has dropped, I think were nearly done.

In the UK you can normally pick up fresh yeast free of charge from the bakers, I get mine from tesco, and get it every week.

I'm not fermenting with it though, I chuck it in the freezer and then boil it up for protein when putting a rum wash down.

Update

Day 6 gravity down to FG 1000. Thats the lowest I've had a molasses wash get down to.
I have racked off into pet bottles to let lt drop clear. Im not using any finning or Sparky. Just time.

I also dicided to start anothr wash. leaving the yeast trub in th Fv. I made another yeast cube starter. 1 cube, 3 tspns sugar, 500ml 30c water, 30 mins and its ready to pich.
Sugar, Water, Molasses. 1090 27L @ 30c. yeast pitched. 30 mins and the airlock is bubbling.

This appeasr to be working well for me.
I just have to run some now and see if it is as good as I think it is.

I've used the fermex fresh stuff few times in rum now, in general they say use 4 times fresh as you would dry bakers yeast, it worked we'll and fermented out nice like yours normski, but I'm the same.as chill, comes on big blocks and can't use enough of it before it turns funny. It does make a.good rum Lees though, volume wise. I didn't taste any difference in the final product. Good luck mate.

Just to point out, That the yeast i was posting about comes in 4 small cubes 40g each and cost 50p for all 4.
I have used one cube per 25l wash. This Morrisons yeast is cheaper than dried bakers yeast, is easy to use, and is quicker to start fermenting and works well.
It is not in a large unusable block.
