Barrel supplies

Postby Admiral Toad » Sun Aug 19, 2012 11:46 am

Hi all
Just back from a cracking camping trip in Scotland
I'll return to my Loch ewe distillery thread later learnt and laughed a lot at that visit
In the mean time anyone help me with a supplier of 5litre oak barrels preferably charred
This is what the guy up there is using but more of that later. ;D

AT,

I too live in the North East but am out of the country at present due to work commitments. Wondered if you could answer the following:
1. Will this outfit toast the barrels etc.
2. Will they sell the 5 litre ones without the lacquer.

Cheers.

@AT
mate, your home distillery continues. Nice one!
Do you know what oak was used and what previous plonk was in the barrel (if any)?

Anyway, I expect that you will further explore the Scotch maturation 'experiments' with it.
If so, lucky you and please keep us updated. ;)

Hi all
Haven't been posting much for several reasons.... busy, playing with motorbikes, lack of peated malt and too bloody hot

Finally got some PM so did a very messy and sweaty mash last night 2 more to do before hols !

As far as the barrels go guys they are toasted inside and laquer is only external. he buys the little barrels in like this

What I do is replace the silly wooden tap supplied with a hardwood bung as the taps tend to weep and hole saw a demijohn cork sized hole in the top so I can add and remove bourbon chunks as well... Works for me and some good stuff maturing ;)

I have been doing some research into where I can get some barrels toasted / charred to what I want.

There are Coopering companies in Poland using Sessile Oak and likewise in the USA using White Oak.

By pure luck more than judgement I stumbled across the website for the last remaining Master Cooper in England. He will make barrels and toast / char to each individuals requirements.

When I get my "Toy room" up and running I'm going to give him a try.

The guy's name is Alistair, he's based near Wetherby, North Yorks, he will courier to anywhere and his contact details are on his website should anyone require them:

www.whiterosecooperage.co.uk

The reason this guy is a Master is due, I believe, to him training one of the few other remaining coopers who works for the Theakstons Brewery.
