Re: Glengourmet Whiskey Smokies
Glengourmet Whiskey Smokies that i purchased were the box of barrel pieces of about 4" x 2" which required chopping down to size of about 2" x 1/2". I added 25 pieces to 5 litre of 40 abv hearts and after two months the spirit as turned a very dark brown colour greenish in the light and tastes extremely oaky not woody, i added 3 sachets of ss classic malt to 4 litre of it and it has made a nice drink without the flavourings it was far too smooth for me,with the flavouring it gives that whiskey bite. next time i am going to use heads and hearts for extra sharpness. with the remaining litre i made a bottle of laphroaig style from the profile kit that imho is great.
glad it turned out ok as the box of barrel pieces contains about 3 kg i may even try them as barbecue smokies as they were intended.
Cheers

Good plan on using heads in the next lot - when you see how the scotch guys do it - they only remove heads for 15min on an 8 hour run - going to be loads left in there.
Whenever I have done a flavoured spirit - rum, faux sugar whiskey, if it tastes good going onto the wood, it will be disappointingly smooth coming off it.
I find it hard to be brave and including some heads - but it is the only way to get that bite you are used to.
I had never heard of "planet babeque" a quick google revealed a man-cave of goodies - I like the big charcoal curry pot, mmmmmm.
