Finger in the air wash
Well just for daftness I have made a wash up with a dark bitter kit (I know it's hopped but what the hell >:D ) some dark barley grain, extra sugar to get up to my normal 1.080ish and good old VS
Smells good
The intention to do a strip then spirit run both on the pothead
I've ordered some genuine whisky cask chips for ageing/flavouring off E bay so we'll give it a go
Might be a disaster but hell I'm gonna live fast and loose

Re: Finger in the air wash
What's happening with that AT? I got my hands on two litres of Lager the other day, it's probably one of the better known ones in the world, and I'm going to toss it in my Airstill with some VS wash left over from the last batch and see what comes out!

My dodgy wash has calmed down still over 1.000 but tis about to be stripped to death
Wish I knew what I was doing

Re: Finger in the air wash
Did the strip run last night and got about 8 litres when mixed averaging about 40 % pretty much what I expected
Certainly got some taste to it
Will do spirit run in next few days (diluted to 30 % or slightly less) when time permits at a lower power setting taking of heads and tails for a future low wines stripping run
Now a couple of daft questions
I assume I wont filter this or it will remove flavour ?
Also I will mature in Demijohns with some good whiskey barrel shavings. I got a half kilo , do you think i should use all that in what I expect will be about 6 litres of 40% ?
Gone well so far so a would appreciate anyones thoughts
Cheers

Re: Finger in the air wash
I use 100-150g of JD chunks in 3lt of spirit at 40%ABV so I think the 500g would be too much but I'd tend to throw in about 200g at first and see how that goes for a few days and judge it from there
My little batch carried over quite a bit of beer smell and flavour so I have 1lt of the stuff and no idea what to do with it

Re: Finger in the air wash
The spirit run went quite well cut to hearts after about 350 ml of heads collected 3.2 L hearts then cut at 50% to collect about 2L of tails for next stripping run
Carried good flavour over from the wash so diluted to apprx 57.5% and added about 170g of shavings
Already got a good colour quite suprised how quick its changed
Will see how it tastes in a day or two

Re: Finger in the air wash
For my next FITAW I've chucked 1.8kg of concentrated dark malt extract from the HBS with 5kg sugar giving 1090 og
Pitched half the VS to try and get it to start a bit slower ,will add rest in a day or two
Meanwhile the first spirit with the chips in, is a lovely dark colour, already developing a nose
Wonder how long to leave chips in ,was expecting a few weeks but this seems to be developing rapidly
