Filtering spirits after distillation

experiment with home made filter

Postby hic52 » Tue Nov 16, 2010 7:29 pm

Had a slight taint and smell (use an air still) and it came with the tea bag type carbon bags I was never able to remove the taint or smell

After discussion on here decided to try and make my own filter to see if it made a difference and it did but am not QUITE there yet.
1st I used a 12 inch long 1 and a half inch wide container (a hydrometer vessel) and packed it with activated carbon filled to about an inch off the top, filter paper in the bottom and a hole drilled in the bottom - seemed to get rid of most of the taint and smell but not quite.

2nd did the same again but on top of the vessel fastened the tea bag container that came with the air still and put an activated carbon bag in - better still but again not quite there.
My question is whats wrong with my set up, is it not long enough or maybe not wide enough, would i get a better result buying a filter and if so which one (am in the UK)
I have found one unexpected result, I borrowed a couple of my wifes glass demejons to put the final spirit in and allowed about a week to stand and "gas off" and the smell is ALMOST gone the taste is about the same.

Bit the bullet and bought an Essencia Carbon Filter System, mainly to beat the VAT man and the raise in prices of the Essencia Carbon Filter System.

Hope it works out ok, not like me to spend!!!
Will report back when it arrives and have put my batches through.
