Ginger beer pop
Hi all here's one to treat the kids
First grow your ginger beer plant
To do this add 2tsp ground ginger and 4tsp sugar
to 700ml warm water then add 1tsp yeast. Each day for the next 7days add 2tsp ground ginger and 4tsp sugar and stir daily
After 7 days strain the ginger plant liquid and divide the plant in half (1 for the next brew 1 to give away)
In a saucepan dissolve 1kg sugar with 1 ltr boiling water add 1 ltr cold water to cool add the juice of 2 lemons
divide the sugar water lemon solution equally between 4 x 2 ltr plastic pop bottles then fill to two thirds full with water
divide the liquid you have strained from your ginger beer plant equally between the 4 pop bottles then top up with cold water to about two inch below full and then squeeze the bottle untill full then tighten the lid.as the brew carbonates the bottle will expand keep a check on this and when the bottle is hard to depress place in the fridge its ready to drink or use as a mixer.
Put your ginger beer plant back in its container top up to 700ml with warm water and start feeding it as above ready for the next batch
cheers
ps, i have never measured the abv if you do let me know

Cheers Bill - I used to make this when I was a kid, seem to remember getting a bit enthusuastic with one batch and it burning like mace or something when you drank it, too much ginger! Happy days!

Re: Ginger beer pop
Thanks bill.
From memory you are looking at 1-2% ABV with the finished product.
I wonder whether we could put our heads together and create a nice Crabbies clone?
If I could make Crabbies for next to nowt my wife would obey my orders for the rest of her life.

Re: Ginger beer pop
I make ginger beer from a coopers ginger beer kit - I normally replace the kit yeast with something decent (EC-118), add sliced and blanched root ginger and up the sugar content to produce something about 6% abv.
I've got about 20 litres here which has been in the keg for about 6 months and is only going down at about a pint a month so I'm really wondering if I should run it through my ss reflux on pot mode.
I wonder what a ginger spirit would be like...
