First time on a double distill

Postby Icefever » Sun Nov 03, 2013 1:42 pm

Right...I've started on a double distill, I've done the first batch down to 20%.(following aidanmac pdf file) I've finished up with 1.2 liters with it all mixed in I finished up at around 50%, is this about right?.

If possible I want to do another strip this afternoon, I can't wait to taste the better stuff. ;D

Yep, I've just looked at 6 of my old run sheets, they all average out @ 1200 ml @ 49.3% so it looks bang on. 2 more runs and you'll have enough to do a 30% spirit run with a bit left over
Always give the hardest job to the laziest person because they will always find the easiest way to do it.

That really depends on the strength of the wash you put into it. I'd say that is on the higher end of things. You can make this a LOT easier on yourself if you get a digital time (like for lamps) with a count down feature on it. Four hours is a good place to start, more or less for weaker or stronger washes. Just adjust it based on the final ABV. Then all you need to do is to fill the AirStill, start the timer, and come back later. Oh yeah, and put the collecting jar under the spout. I keep forgetting that part, makes the wife very grumbly. Save your attention for the spirit run when you do NOT want to walk away and miss making a cut or changing a jar.

Can I add in a couple of things to what Chill said? :)

While it's generally accepted practice that you should never leave your still unattended, I also use timers for my stripping runs to allow me do other work which may involve me going into the house for short periods and If you're going to process your stripping runs using timers you should;

1. Try to get your wash as clear as possible to prevent puking because the lid of the airstill can get blown off by an explosive surge boil or puke. Clear like this will completely prevent puking.

2. Place your Airstill in a large basin or plastic box to contain any spillage if the lid does come off.

3. Make sure the circuit your Airstill is plugged into has a cut off or trip switch in case liquid from a puke contacts the electrical connections.

4. Always use Distillers Conditioner in stripping runs ;)

I know all these things are routine to experienced Airstillers but maybe not so obvious to new members of our illustrious craft.

Cheers AM, it all makes sense when you read it and then think about it. I hope to have the other runs done so that I can do a spirit run this Sat.

I've just been collecting 1350ml straight on the first run then watering down to 30% once I have enough for a spirit run.
I then discard 50ml and collect 250ml which I put to one side then collect down to 60% to keep.
Is this wrong?
