Just a rusty hulk now.

We payed a visit to the Middleton Railway while up in Yorkshire. Out front is a rusting hulk but when you read of her life story....I got to wondering if she ever hauled sugar cane to a disillery??

I Googled the factory name but alas they only made sugar...no rum mentioned.. ::)

That'd likely be because rum was originally made from "sugar processing waste", hence wouldn't it just have been passed on to somewhere that did make rum ?

After all, the pulp from sugar beet is processed into "cattle nuts" after the sugar peeps have done with it, but certainly not by British Sugar to my knowledge........

Certainly a shame no-one will restore the engine.......

I agree, its always a shame to see something like that. However, for it to be even possible you have to be able to run it somewhere to generate the funds for the restoration.

Perhaps someday someone with deep pockets will decide to help preserve historical machinery and not just historical buildings.

That's what I was looking for, any info that the waste was sent to a distillery maybe...this Link tells the basic life of the plant.

I agree 100% Myles...she is in a bad way, I read in the paper t'other day this about an old Victorian pumping station has now been opened to the public...but it all needs to be saved for the future

Restorations do happen - it just needs the right people with the right mindset. Look at how the last airworthy Vulcan was kept flying for years by such a group - who are now incidentally trying to do the same thing with an English Electric Canberra..

Vulcan B2 XM655 is based at Wellesbourne airfield near Stratford upon Avon, where we live.
For my 60th birthday my wife got me a private visit, and I was allowed to climb up into the cockpit and sat in the captain seat..

I must admit I was like a dog with two doodars...what struck me was how small the cabin was for the crew.
The bomb bay was something else...so large, you could just imagine an A bomb sat there waiting to be used..thank God there never were.

XH558, the Vulcan grounded last year, is at Robin Hood airport and there are a wide range of tours available - such a shame she was grounded.

There's also an airframe (can't remember the reg) at Conventry in the aviation museum where they do tours - I spent a very happy 45 minutes in the cockpit chatting to an old guy who knew Vulcans inside out.

Cheers

XJ823 is currently at the Solway Aviation Museum.

Whilst she was based at Ascension Island in 1982 she was never officially used in operations.
It is a shame she flew in to Carlisle, but can't fly out again.
