What size Copper for coil?

I'm going to use an external coil in a pot seen as though this is my first try at it all, what size is ok to use? Does it need to be 1/2" or can I use some 8mm coil?

In an earlier post your mentioned Reflux an I posted a reply based on that. If you intend building a reflux still you'll need a coil inside the column but if you're building a pot still you'll need a different type of condenser.

So, what type of still are you building?

I keep getting confused,it's a pot still with separate coil in a tub.

In that case 1/2" would be good. I have seen people use 3/8" but to me, it looks as though it could easily become blocked or kinked.

When you are making the coil in the tub, be sure that there are no uphill sections in it where the condensate can pool and block the vapour.

For some obscure reason the set-up is known as a "flake-stand".

For a Pot Still a Liebig condenser is, in my opinion, the simplest to build and I've posted drawings and plans for making this type. Believe me when I say that if I did it anyone can

Yes I've just looked at the Liebig it looks good would it harm to use Liebig and a coil too?

That would be serious overkill. The Liebig in my drawings is the one I use on my 50lt Pot Still and I run it with the coolant at a bare trickle. There's nothing to stop you using both but it really is unnecessary

I'm not sure why you want copper scrubbers for a pot still?
I guess it can't do any harm putting more copper in the vapours path,but I'm not sure it will do much good.

I use copper mesh in my pot still riser (normally just used for stripping) I run an all stainless rig, so this is for removing sulphur compounds).

There is no reflux and it doesn't slow down the take off rate, copper contact is most useful on the stripping run.

If running sugar wash for neutral, you don't really need any copper in there at all in my experience, if running something like rum, it will be really eggy smelling if its left out. Folks with copper pot still heads wont have this issue, its just because I'm using stainless.
