I built a pot still that used a 50l SS beer keg and was fired by a 7.5kw gas burner. It is great, but sadly I have had to move house and no longer have anywhere discreet and ventilated that I can use it. I have a couple of options, one is to scrap it and buy one of the counter top ones, or convert it to use an immersion element and add some heat control, or of course some of you mighty folk might have a different course of action.

I guess it all hinges on how easy it would be to fit an element into the barrel, the electrics themselves I am happy to tackle as I am studying for an electrical and electronic engineering degree.

What would be your suggested course of action?

As the owner of a counter-top still, I think you will be most displeased with the downgrade. I'd look at fitting an electric element or mounting the head on a different boiler.

Hi...I think you've answered the question yourself....go electric. There's posts on the forum about fitting an element to a keg. You already have the keg & column so your half way there...most of the cost.

Because this is a pot still, and if you have the room, i would say buy an electric milk can boiler and convert the existing keg into a thumper.

If you don't have the space for a boiler and thumper then convert the keg to electric.

Or trade it in with another user that wants a gas keg.

I bet that would be more expensive than converting!
