I am building a new wash/wort immersion chiller. In condensers we get the most efficiency from putting the cold 'in' at the point where the product is coolest.

Does it matter with wort chillers if the cold goes in at the top or the bottom? I am aiming for the bottom at the moment but wondered if it really matters at all?

Bring the cold water in at the top, that way the cooler wort will drop causing a convection flow. If you bring it in at the bottom the cooler wort will remain at the bottom.

+1...this is the one I made years ago...and I still use it.

Mine will seem very similar. I opted for twin coil, mainly 'cos I had some 10mm and many of the retail one seem a bit poor.

I do...can't harm anything..helps to level out the temp.

Today is wash / test run day in some boiling water. Is it worth adding a good dollop of vinegar?

I'd stick with citric mate..

Proper chuffed 30l 99c -> 20c in just 6 maybe 7 mins. Got excited and forgot to stop the timer straight away.

All done, trials and mods finished, so its picture time

Meh! Looks like standard 20mm gravel marine agg' - about £40 a tonne - cheaper if bought in bulk............

Dunno why it'd be expensive packapoo, it's just dredged, off loaded, graded and bagged or bulk delivered.........

My guess it is doesn't grow in NZ

Nice chiller Mash, glad you are happy with it.,if you weren't then that much copper is an investment anyway.
