Re: Micronised barley
It's half the price, cos it's half the product.
Malted is key to getting the sugar for fermentation.
Torrified, micronized, Boiled, baked and buggered is not the same.

Re: Micronised barley
I do use torrified (which is v.v.v.v.v similar) as an adjunct in a beer, for head retention or flavour. Not to replace malt (it wouldn't).
The malting process is key to alcohol production.
I don't need to try it, I can only liken it to putting sugar in your fuel tank to make the car run sweeter - it sort of sounds right but we know it ain't gonna work.
What recipe had you got in mind?

Re: Micronised barley
Didn’t really have a recipe just subbing it for mated barley and maybe using amylase to convert the starch to fermentable sugar is what I was thinking.
I understand malting converts the starches in the grain to fermentable sugars, but my thinking was that if micronising releases the starches from the grain then logic would suggest that mashing and use of enzyme would convert the released starch to sugars ? Perhaps I’m wrong

Re: Micronised barley
Don't think it works like that. Here you go try this.
http://howtobrew.com/book/section-2/wha ... lt-defined
Heres a thought for you.... If malting wasn't necessary dint you think the commercial bean counters would have been of it years ago.
