Hi all, first off congratulations on a great site. I have been poking around for a while and learning a lot. I was wondering if anyone has used BSM Fittings like these on a still build instead of tri clover fittings. The rubber seal would have minimal contact and would be of EPDM rubber.

And welcome, I can see a couple of potential problems with them, mainly they’re not as flexible as tri-clamps, in that once they’re tightened up, you can’t adjust the angle, with a tri-clamp, you can tighten it with the two pipes twisted in any direction, plus you can remove tri-clamps without having to unscrew them.

Imagine a column with an output from one side and a condenser connected, you would have to unscrew it off the boiler to remove it. Which would be a bit of a chore.

Plus as the threads wear with time, meaning they will screw around further than their original intended position.

Well spotted Anavrin, I knew that there was a reason that I left this post alone last night, it needed an engineers' insight.

Thanks for the reply, just for clarification as the photos don’t show it but the fitting is 3 piece meaning the nut is not attached so that you can adjust the angle if needed. We use these fittings at the winery I work at to connect all the pipes and hoses for shifting wine ( hence the availability of them for me). I was Mose worried about the alcohol from the still coming in contact with the rubber and what it would do.
