Hi Guys

I remember a few months ago when Wilko had the 8 Litre Kilner Jars in at £20, I missed out on one then but I've just been to Gee Tee's and picked one up for £18.99, they also had a 5 litre version, I couldn't see the price but cheaper I would expect.

The taps a bit cheap and crappy but maybe I can find a replacement, will be great for aging my first AG Whisky on oak

Was in Liverpool recently and came across those but I wasn't' hopeful about being able to replace that tap so I passed. they would be handy for small batches as my present storage requires a full 20Lt per unit to exclude air.

If you do find a workable solution these would be very useful for small batches.

Ranking, as I do, amongst the world's most inept handymen, I am loath to give any sort of advice on such matters.

I do have one of these and, though it isn't readily apparent from a photograph, the area around the tap has been moulded flat. So assuming one can obtain a threaded mini tap, it doesn't appear that it would be an insurmountable task to replace the existing one.

I was thinking I could use a stainless steel nut/bolt with some washers and a silicone seal as a short term solution, just to plug the hole, then I can age/store spirit without worrying about the plastic.

I was gifted two of these for xmas, i promptly searched for a s/s tap and found this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Ste ... 1652946085?

I kept the thick plastic washer on the outside and made a couple of silicone washers from silicone baking sheet, used two because the s/s washers are bevelled and i didn't want to crack the jar :P nipped it up carefully and now i'm a happy chappy.

Cheers B_D

Cool beans, looks like I'll be getting one of them, my jars looking quite sad at the moment, it's full of ready mixed cordial for the kids.

I was considering getting one of these however, I happened across these bottles -

For £20 I get 8 litres of storage, the same as the Kilner Jar however, this also comes with 8 litres of Cider which in my opinion makes it a much better price.

I currently have 7 or 8 of these Jars under my kitchen table. As I fill them they will be going into the loft for long term storage.

Every now and then I go out and buy a new one :-)

The only problem is, once the label has been removed, the glue is really difficult to remove (although I have found that a piece of kitchen towel laid over it and sprayed with WD40 makes it a lot easier after a 10-15 minute wait!)

I bought a couple of stainless steel taps @ £3.50 each plus £1.79 postage from:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301498080126? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Removing the silvered plastic tap from the Kilner Dispenser, the threaded section of the steel tap was a good fit. Not being sure whether the accompanying sealing washers were plastic or silicone, I purchased some cork washers from my local hardware/haberdashers shop. I used three, either side of the glass and tightened up. It worked a treat.

I am assuming that, given the history of cork in association with all manner of strengths of alcoholic beverages, it should be a safe choice?
