Lid loose or not
Andy I most times use an airlock but if im using say alcotec 48 if it gets too much (lid expands) i loosen the lid but still keep the airlock on, its a historic thing with me as i had a bad time once with wine that went to vinegar and lost all my mash - that shouldn\'t happen with the sort of mash that is used in spirit making though.
Hope this helps

concur..... it\'s often temperature dependant.
I\'ve got 3 batches of SS triple in the outhouse at the moment, they\'re normally done in a week indoors, but as it probably averages 16 to 18 C outside they\'re still bubbling slightly, and they haven\'t been so vigorous that I need to remove the lid, or airlock etc.
Yes, when it\'s warmer, I\'ll sometimes remove the airlock and just put a plug of cotton wool in the grommet, just in case any flies get around.
But as I say, as I\'ve not really bothered about the temp at the moment, the airlocks have been fine with the lids on...
