How much yeast

Just bought an 11 gallon stainless
steel fermenter.
If doubling the volume, do I need to
double the yeast?
Am using Vodka Star for my neutrals
and pleased with product so far.
Would extra nutrient be good?

Can't comment about washes but when I'm doing a big beer (50L) I always double up on yeast and nutrients.

The yeast will need more nutrients if doing more work and although if you use the same amount of yeast they will eventually multiply they will already be tiered and it increases the chance of another nasty infection taking hold. More yeast will reduce the lag phase.

Diverch, know where your at there.
These turbo yeasties are tough,
originally produced to make fuel
for cars. Love a bit of Top ALco
drag racing myself. So can we get
away with just more nutrient ???

The yeast will multiply as long as they are respiring aerobically when they run out of oxygen they will stop multiplying and start making ethanol. I imagine if you are using a small amount of yeast for 11 gallons you will want to air rate the wash well and maybe again after a few hours, this will allow lots of yeast to grow before they start working making booze.

I turned mine into a still :D A touch cheaper on Amazon but you don't get the tap or the airlock
(Oil Drum Holds 50 Litres Made of Stainless Steel Wide Mouth Container with Tap Opening https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GXNA5AS/ ... Qxb4CMSVRH)

Yeast will multiply until their numbers find an equilibrium with what's available in their given environment, if you add a little then in time the colony will grow or you add loads & the colony is already there. Add too much & my understanding is that some will die off but live yeast will use dead yeast for nutrient so no big deal. If you're doing a big wash it's just not worth the risk or the time for the sake of probably the cheapest ingredient, hoof it in there!
If you use 1 turbo in 20 litres then 2 sachets in 40 is no different but if you only use 1 then they will need more nutrients to support a colony growing into a 40 litre wash.
I await Robert to contribute a recommendation of a kilo of bakers yeast that's done in 12 hours after sweeping the foam out of his kitchen door!!

Ouch! Have I done something to upset you Benoit? :)
My amounts of yeast don't vary by much, generally (ALMOST ALWAYS) 100g of Allinson's in every 21 -23 litres that I want to ferment.
Leaving sufficient headroom usually allows the Yeast Monster to grow and die back.
I have learned the hard way.
5 days I consider good. 3 days for a pure Malt, which has lower sugar in the wash.

Robert.

Love the phrase.

I am a convert to proper (even heavy handed) yeast pitching.

In the past I have fermented 300 litre on 2 5g sachets. Yes it worked. Was it the best it could have been. No.

Hoof it in there!

Thats a lot cheaper than the one I
bought. How would you fit and buy
a tap? What size? where from?
Am assuming you just drill a hole
in lid for airlock and fit.
Benoit asking you because I want to
replace my aging fleet of plastic
fermenters, S.S is for life.
What you have found is half the price!!!

They come with a screw down bung in the tap space but it's just a 1/2" bsp fitting, easy to get your hands on some stainless hex nipple & a full port tap

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PILUJD4/ ... Rxb3R2S73B

The container does have other sizes, comes from Italy & took about 4-5 days to get to me, the links above all come from China & took about 2 weeks. I wouldn't drill the lid, just don't screw it down so tight & don't use the rubber gasket it comes with I think it would be fine.

You've done nothing ED, I simply know you to be an advocate of higher amounts of yeast & still having the occasional chuckle at your freak ferment the other week. I'm probably not far behind you to be fair....how much comes in those little tins? I must use half a tin per 23-25 litres, I don't seem to get many runs out of a tin anyway!

or fibre washers for these taps ???
