Sterilising using a dishwasher

I was wondering if it is OK to replace the usual dishwasher tablet with sterilising powder / granules and use the dishwasher for bottles and other bits and pieces. Has anyone done this or have an opinion on whether it would work?

The jam making fraternity have been using dishwashers to sterilise their jars for a while, try Googling "sterilising jam jars dishwasher" and you will get lots of tips.

I sterilise my bottles by filling them with 40% ABV spirits, seems to work, I have never had one go bad yet.
