Soak them in Seredent to clean them.

Use the search box for "SPP" for an alternative. SPP - Spiral Prismatic Packing - small stainless spring like pieces, gives better results too.

the SPP look bang on... who sells them?

iv done the sterident thing but they still smell a bit and i think it adds to the spirit and thats why id like to try something different and i like the look of these!

I used to use OXi to clean my saddles, but I moved on to SS SPP, top & tailed with a copper scrubber, this way if you 100% reflux by lowering the water temp so no flow of spirit, it tends to self clean the packing as well as bringing up the fores to the top of the column.
Some people have stopped making the small SSP, but you will get near to the same results and behaviour using SS scrubbers from top to bottom at a lot cheaper price.

I use a short column packed with SS scrubbers for making white rum, and used to use scrubbers in my tall column. They are a really good packing, and clean up nicely with some warm water at the end of the run.

NO, use SS scrubbers with 1 copper top & bottom. Push the top copper scrubber up to the bottom of the coil and not into it, pack the rest with SS and a copper at the bottom, this is just the right amount of copper.

I went to Lidl where they sell 4 SS ones in a blister pack for about 99p, I bought a tenner's worth, they have a multitude of uses.
The copper ones are a little harder to find, I'm sure we discussed this on former posts a few times, I'm sure a search will find them, "choreboy" are the best ones if you can find them.

You really want to ram them in there - the old piece of advice is you need to be able to breath though the packed tube, but its difficult to blow through.

So it can be pretty densely packed.

well i followed you advice lads and i got 3.8 litres@ 94% and it was very good with little smell.

im thinking of making some kind of parrot but filling it with copper mesh to take more of the nasties out of the final spirit before i cut it, or am i wasting my time?

Copper needs to be in the vapour path and not the spirit to do any good

Copper scrubber at the bottom of coil so vapours pass through it, vapour condenses on the coil and drops back into the copper scrubber and then it all happens again & again & again (Refluxing).
Excess vapour passes the coil and goes through to the cooling condenser and comes out as spirit and depending how low a temp you run the coil depends on how much vapour passes.
The T500 is a CM (cooling Management) still
