caramel vodka
my missis loves the SS caramel vodka.im toying with the
idea of making my own caramel vodka.with the SS essence you
add upto 250gms of sugar (sweetend to your own liking) to 30% abv
of neutral spirit then mix in the SS essence. im thinking of following
aidens thread about making distillers caramel see here
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2557&p=15351&hilit=distillers+caramel#p15351
put a bit of distillers caramel to my neutral and add sugar to my
liking.will this work or will it end up to sweet
whats your thoughts

Re: caramel vodka
Distillers caramel is for colour only. My guess, having not tasted it, is that your missus likes the flavour of caramel candy. It is much less, er, burnt than Aidan's recipe. Make some of that and she should be happy.

Re: caramel vodka
chill +1; You could also try some real Canadian Maple Syrup. I always feel it gives a Caramel type taste when added to distilled spirits. I've added it to Sippin' Whisky in the past with very pleasant results, might be worth a try
You don't have to make a bottle just pour a shot into a glass and drip some real Canadian Maple into it until the taste is what you're after. No sugar required as the Maple Syrup will add enough sweetness and if it doesn't work out you've only used a small measure of spirit

Re: caramel vodka
My recipe for Distillers Caramel is for adding/regulating colour. It does not add any flavour other than a little bitterness if you use too much

cheers aidan thats what I like to hear, paying for the SS type is a bit dear over the time
£3 odd at a time at least I can make my own caramel and darken the spirit and sweeten it
to how she likes it

Re: caramel vodka
I think you are missing a point. "Caramel Vodka has a smooth caramel flavour." Aidan's caramel will NOT give you that. Neither will white sugar. That will give you sweet, dark vodka, not a caramel favour. You need to make or buy some caramel candy and dissolve it in the vodka.

I have no idea how much, you will need to experiment. Being a DIY kind of guy and not wanting industrial food crap in my drink, I'd do something like this:

You can always eat the leftovers. :-)
