Greetings from gods own playground also known as Eden, Shangrila, Valhalla or to lesser mortals East Lancashire. Ive also heard it referred to in less glowing terms, mostly by those on the wrong side of the Pennines.

Hi I've been stilling for a couple of years now and find the whole process (not to mention the product) fascinating. Im still making mistakes and learning all the time.

I started with the latest all singing all dancing latest piece of cutting edge technology (thats what the adds said anyway), the T500. I quickly came to realise the adds were better than the still. I still have it, now somewhat modified with boiler power control, insulation on the column and boiler, split cooling lines for product and reflux condensers, copper product take off tube, 6mm raschig rings packing and a good quality heavy SS needle valve for reflux cooling control, I got it off fleabay really cheap. I also put together a beer stripper head for it using 42mm copper with 15 / 22mm liebig, this power control and the needle valve probably made the biggest difference. Its biggest problem however and one I cant see an easy way past is the plastic cap on the top, who in their right mind dreamt that one up. I will probably construct a new copper reflux column for the boiler, probably a VM. I dont mind the CM and it has very good points (heads and tails compression, that get even better if run at about 1000 watts) but a VM should be easier to construct and easier to control and also I believe offers tails compression if properly run.

I started with the almost mandatory Turbo yeasts, well 2 came with the still. Ive never been satisfied however with things that merely work I need to know how and why. In the last two years Ive tried many of the sugar wash recipes on the various sites but while they have all worked Ive never really hit the sweet spot, I did really like the Deathwish wheatgerm wash, I ran it twice through my stripper and then oaked it for 3 months, it came out with a lovely colour and delicate malty flavour, not exactly scotch but nice, it would be a shame though to put it through my column for a neutral. Ive made some really nice gin using my own essence made with a little mini still I knocked up. I would love to (and will) get into all grain malt whisky but thats another story.

Ive been on many of the international sites and have been a little dismayed by the attitudes Ive found when you use words like Turbo and T500. I must admit its not where I want to be either but I wouldnt look down on those that do, we all find our level in this hobby and should help and respect the views of others.

Finally Im 60, a bus driver and my wife says Im the second most hansome guy she's ever seen, after Cliff Richards, aarrrgggghhhhhhhh

Sorry I don't use any of the equipment this forum was aimed at, as I tend to use keg boilers with hand built copper vapour paths. Hope you won't hold that against me.

Hi to everyone on here this is my first post and found this forum about 3 weeks ago.Had been reading all about Stills on an American forum and just happened to find you lot.What can i say "thank heavens" there is a UK forum of people enjoying such a noble past-time. Al-tho i have yet to build a still i have been vigorously doing the research and have a good idea what i would like to build, but for now im going to keep reading until funds will allow me to buy that expensive copper ha ha.
