Stainless steel has a level of iron in it and can be slightly magnetic. I think people checking if scrubbers were magnetic was for copper ones, which isn't supposed to be magnetic.

Stainless steel does vary. There isn't a 'pure' SS because it is an alloy. Some stainless will rust too. That said good quality SS is non magnetic. Hence why SS saucepans don't work on induction hobs unless they have an encapsulated pad on the bottom.

I would forget the magnet test.Wet them and leave them on the draining board, the ones that rust soon make themselves known.

The magnet test might be good in the shop....before you buy.

I've checked the ones I have had in my 2" VM for 2 years and they are very slightly magnetic, still shiney and no sign of deterioration.

+1

I don't remember where I got them from, but they said 100% stainless rather than just stainless which is why I bought them. Buying from a catering place is good advice as their clients wouldn't put up with sub-standard product. Even if they are on the pricey side remember they will last years and years and years for our purposes.
