I bought 24 70cl bottles of gin to day to fill my 15L oak barrel and I have checked with water and it's 15L ,any way I worked out I would need 21.42 bottles to fill it but when I filled it with the gin it only took 19.5 bottles which confused me , the only thing I can put it down to is the bottles of gin have more than they say on bottle , don't get me wrong I will not be reporting them to weights and measures lol , any one else come across this before ??

Most bottles will be stamped underneath with the capacity then a distance, so something like 0.7l 50mm.
This means it's 0.7 when filled to 50mm of the top. This is used for setting up the bottling machines.
You have probably just over filled each bottle.

It will be the barrel mate
Nearly all the ones I've used have had a lower capacity than what they are sold as typically 10% or so

Some water soaked in. Expanded oak. Holds a bit less.
