I currently use a wee airstil and have always just used the filter that came with it! I didnt even know u were meant to replace the carbon bit in it lol. Needless to say I just ordered a pack of new ones but could anyone tell me how much each replacement is meant to filter? The one iv been using must have done at least 15 liters of vodkastar just out of the airstill! are there any other good methods of filtering?

i have been reading over these filters for a while now but i dont think i can justify getting one just yet as i am only making relativly small amounts at the minute... and i have a 10 pack of new filters that i may as well use first.
so would i be right in thinking i should soak them in boiling water before using them? and also dilute my spirit to 40% before filtering?

Yeah, you should run them through with some water to get rid of the dust first, and filtering works best at 40 or so rather than higher strengths - also chilled works better too - best filter on a budget is a stainless steel funnel, coffee filter and a bag of activated carbon. If you imagine the amount of carbon the spirit is travelling through in one of those standard filters, then imagine the difference with a coffee filter, then you look at the price of a bag of carbon compared to those... you get the general idea!

Good point Aidan.
I have pondered the very same thing.
The only issue is should you only add spirit to the point that just covers the carbon making sure all those molecules get some contact, or add more spirit but stir and shake vigorously to achieve the same effect?
The former way could prove costly, unless you were to do it in small batches and reuse the carbon say for a couple of litres of spirit.
The one advantage of the funnel method would be that you can be sure that all your alcohol is getting at least some face time with the carbon.
You have got me thinking though.
