Sounds like an excellent idea to me! I am one of those who is willing to have a go at things but have no experience in working with metal - if anyone fancies knocking up a complete dummies guide to a project like this, I'm sure a fair few would be very grateful!

Bit of a thought - the compression fitting at D - could this be removable / replaceable ?

Seems the perfect place to put a thumper....

Good thought. Yes this a standard connection fitting that could be used to split the head into two pieces for shipping / storage. If you wanted to insert a thumper at some time in the future, it would be a simple process. You would not have to modify anything that you have done.

Just heard from Richard that SS are Working on an 'alembic' system which looks to me like a pot head and will be available in a couple of months
May well go for that but definitely going for Brians version before that
I like the idea of a copper head as all or most big distilleries use :D

Looking at the various options and combinations that people offer around the world, I would choose the following.

All copper – because anyone in this forum could make it if they put their mind to it - or they know somebody who can.

500 mm high Column 42 mm dia.

A tee connection at the top of the Column

The vertical leg reduced to 22mm and left “Open” to be fitted with a bung, either silicon or cork, to act as a safety blow out feature. The bung could be plain or drilled to take a thermometer / probe.

The horizontal leg to taper down to 22mm and be fitted with a compression type joint which will allow the condenser to be rotated to give any slope

The Condenser to be a 27mm Jacket over the 22mm Product Line and be 600mm long with 15mm cooling water inlet and outlet pipes.

Looking at some installations in Australia such as this one, the connection to the T500 lid is by using a 40mm brass backing nut soldered to the base of the column – I am assuming that this nut is available in the UK, there are other options available but more expensive.

The materials for this work out at around £85 per pot. This could go up or down depending on the quantity, but this price is based making three.

The following is a sketch of what I would propose and a shopping list to go with it. If you want to make your own go for it, if you want help and advice ask for it. If you want one ready made then let me know.

Savings could be made by reducing the size of the condenser to 22mm over 15mm and some of the lengths shorter.

Thats my setup.
I am only using it for stripping at the moment.
its 700ml tall in 50ml diam
Works a treat
