Ball valve or gate valve

Postby Anavrin » Wed Jul 30, 2014 9:03 am

I've ordered a 1" two piece full bore ball valve for my VM mod, for two reasons

1, they're cheaper than gate valves
2, you can easily tell from the position of the handle if it's open or closed

The main advantage I can see with a gate valve is you have much more control over the flow as it takes several turns of the wheel to fully open, the ball valve on the other hand has a lever that moves through 90° from fully closed to fully open.

It will arrive tomorrow I hope, I'm just worried it will be too much of a blunt instrument when trying to make fine adjustments, any thoughts if it will be ok.

You will be fine, don't sweat it. The great thing about VM is the fact that large changes on the valve equates to relatively fine control on the output.

If you end up having trouble making small changes. Try extending the lever of the valve.

We'll I'm hoping it will be much more controllable, without affecting the amount of reflux too much, my boka on its own was quite frustrating, I could only take off liquid at a really slow rate before the temp would shoot up and the ABV would drop, if the valve comes tomorrow , I'll be a busy boy finishing my build ready for some junkahol at the weekend :-)
