Forum Etiquette

A place for general discussion

Forum Etiquette

Postby Almanac » Wed Apr 01, 2015 8:34 pm

On forums such as this, members post contributions which you can take or leave according to your needs while respecting the right of the member to post his/her contribution.

It is not required that you agree with anything posted by another member(s) but it is simple good manners to allow others to have, and post, their opinions and views without having to suffer smart-arse remarks about their posts or vindictive commentary on their contributions, disguised as humour. Such action makes other members uncomfortable and stifles debate and free speech.

If you have a different or opposing view to something posted by another member, post your different view, without derogatory reference to the poster of the view you disagree with. This makes for healthy debate in which all members can contribute and everyone enjoys freedom of speech.

The reason this forum is seen, by all, as such a friendly place is that the majority of members have no interest in taking personal pot-shots at other members, their views, posts or opinions or other actions, pretending to do them favours while actually trying to belittle them.

TBH,this started as a total Q?

I gave it a little thought.

I am in total agreement with Aidan here; another members views, posts or opinions are indeed entirely their own,and should be respected as such.
Some of these views or opinions are now commonly accepted by the wider illicit distilling community, and may indeed be regarded as a form of truth.

There are very few established facts within this "hobby",and boundaries are pushed and new methods found daily, and long may it continue,it makes our lives richer.

The name calling and joshing on this site is done with no malice, and with tongue in cheek, isn't it?
That done by myself is no exception.
If it makes you feel better, smack my bottom and call me Shirley....

I will continue to argue against opinion/experience stated as fact.

I have just scanned the whole site looking for the reason for this thread, from recent posts made.
I found nothing, and so assume that it may be personal and may even be historical in its issuance.
I may be paranoid, but I am not going anywhere.

Robert.

I am,as always willing to be corrected. :)

I don't recall anyone being offended by what you've posted here over the years P ;D

This post was originally prompted by the arrogance of one person who seems to feel they have a Jimmy-given right to comment on and knock anything posted by another member as a form of sport or humour.

As it says above "If you have a different or opposing view to something posted by another member, post your different view, without derogatory reference to the poster of the view you disagree with. Here endith the soap box for today.

Think this is the best pace to post on

SD from whatever country please wind your respective necks in and sort your businesses out

For the few years I've been a member of this forum I've never seen such grief

I don't want to leave this forum but I get enough grief at work without having my hobby compromised as well

Enough is enough for Gods sake

Right the fair light of Dawn and back to work/grief as usual
For what its worth here are some of my more sober thoughts
On the thread that has caused such umbridge over the weekend people have spoken about censorship of views presumably referring to some of Aidanmacs posts.
I might be wrong but I don't think that's what AM was trying to achieve merely to calm down an escalating slanging match between parties with axes to grind. Surely that's not unreasonable ?
If the posts had been as mature as some of the later ones then Im sure I would still be making the odd comment myself because yes as a past and future user of that kit I have an interest too
Lets see what develops but can we please try and keep this brilliant forum free from commercial interests and wrangles.

One final thing. Can someone tell me who the moderators are and what their powers are. It seems I post a lot more than many of them but know nothing about them either. I have no want to be in this inner circle but if, as it seems, that one of them can remove a members post at will without recourse well that would worry me
Equally I'm sure they do a good job at removing offensive posts or Spam before any damage is done although I didn't know that spelling and grammar correction were part of their remit.
Hope I don't get deleted for posting this !

Interesting bearing in mind what's been posted recently

There's a couple of names there you know longer or rarely see and a couple more I've never seen post in my few years on here

Now,are you goading me there AT?
On occasion,I do indeed spot a great post that looks so wrong due to to a SP mistake, and I correct it,and PM the poster to let them know/no that I have done it.As a courtesy, not a policeman type of thing.
'Tis but a moments work to change back to the original,if desired.
The usual response is "Not had the first coffee yet, thanks" or some such.
You could post entirely in TXT SPK 4 ALL I CARE,but may get fewer responses to your posts.
I'm joshing,in case you hadn't realised mate.

I usually notice spelling mistakes but look past them to the content and focus on that.

Typos are easy on a phone touch screen and english is a mish mash of other languages with idiosyncratic and inconsistent rules for spelling. They are just conventions intended to aid clarity and unambiguity. They change over time which is why we don't write like Shakespeare. Some people are dyslexic, suffered poor education or live where conventions are different.

Given all that, if you clearly understand what was written then job done.

If a moderator wants to take the trouble to fix spelling then fair play and thank you. If not I can live with it and not really care. In a way it is a small insight into the fact that spelling ability is unrelated to relevant intelligence and worthwhile experience.

Having said all that, I do try and spell correctly as best as I and my phone can.

Having been away for a while all I can say is that this development (a passive aggressive mystery filled topic like this) is sorely disappointing. I think you all need a new rule here..

If you are going to fight go fight it out on homedistiller.com
This kind of nonsense is like a nutrient in their poisonous well. They love it.
We all already know that we can take or leave whatever advice we find here. No need to didactically remind anyone.

As a 5 year lurker on both sites my bullshit detector is state of the art. I'll trust your advice on making good booze, you trust my advice on this. There is absolutely zero need for any of us to become RAD-ical here. Carry on.

A nice choice of words there.
Sometimes here we may become defensive, we try not to fight.
And from my hill I keep shouting out that I know some stuff, but not everything.
And if I can help someone, I will.

Other people call out stuff that they have learned, and so we continue, aiding and abetting.

Regarding other sites, and avatars in this case, I don't entertain toilet humour, if you catch my drift, and would be concerned at anyone that did.

Let's just continue to help each other and keep life sweet.
