Water Temperature

Hi All,

In the process of doing my first batch, the guy at the shop said it doesnt matter what the initial water temperature is so i mixed everything in with the temp at 24 degrees. It has been a few hours and it is not bubbling. Will it be ok or is there something i can do?

if its a wash your putting on like a triple distilled, it needs to start off at about 30ºc like IT SAYS ON THE PACKET...

iv just put a classic wash on and did it @ 30ºc and within the hour, it had a nice thick 2 inch cap on and it was bubbling like hell..

i think its pretty much common knowledge that these things need to start at 30ºc so god knows what he was trying to tell you.

It is a wash, and i realise this now.
I need to know if i should tip it out and get another wash or will it still work?

if its bubbling, leave it....

try and keep the temp at about 24ºc ish and see how it goes..

the triple distilled washes are pretty tolerant when it comes to temp unless it gets too cold because i had a wash go to just over 40ºc when id left the heater belt on and it was ok lol

if you have another tub to put another wash in then by all means throw one on!

ah.. well if its only been a few hours and the waters too cold, either heat it up with a heater pad/belt or wrap it up and leave it over night and it should kick off then.

Bubbling away nicely now, hopefuly all good.
Bought a T500 today, went a bit gun-ho off the mark. Lots of reading and research this week while I wait.

Looks like plenty of knowledgable people with lots to offer around here which is a big help for someone like me that knows little about brewing, but lots about drinking!!

As I have been reading up I have noticed there are a few different production packs available. I got a 8kg classic pack with my starter kit which I have used this time but am interested to see the difference with the triple distilled pack.
would I be right to say it produces less but a better quality?

Hopefully I wont annoy people with all my questions, i've got a lot to learn..

Does it matter about the water quality you use for the wash. I just used tap water which is drinkable but not filtered. Is this ok to use and also use for the watering down of the distilled alcohol?
My fermenter is bubbling away like crazy and sitting around 24 degrees. Looking forward to the next stage !!

I just make the wash using mixer tap some might do different but doesn't seem to make any difference by the time you add or filter with carbon nee bother

Pardon my ignorance, a few more questions.

When do I know when the wash is ready to add the turbo clear?
Is it when the bubbles stop in the airlock or is it a specific time frame?
I put my wash on saturday just gone and it was bubbling like crazy for a few days. Last couple of days it has gradually slowed down. I checked just before and it is down to 1 bubble every 10 seconds.
Do I Wait until it completely stops?
Its my first one and Im paranoid Im going to stuff it up.

Lookin forward to firin' the T500 up!!

If you have a hydrometer, it will be when the gravity stops dropping. it should be somewhere around 0.99 - certainly under 1.0 for a sugar wash.

Dip a finger in - if it's sweet, it isn't done. You may still get some bubbles from the air lock when its finished, that's just gas suspended in the liquid, a good stir (de-gassing) speeds up the clearing process. but make sure its done first.

hi again test the sg and when its the same two days on the trot its done providing its less than sg 1.000 if its above its stalled so you decide to run it or try to get it going again, you will still get the odd bubble when its done because of the c02,you will also see it clearing from the top
