Could anyone tell me if this would make a suitable boiler if the thermostat could be bypassed?

In a word "Yes"........but.....the problems you will have to sort out will be the seal around the boiler body & lid, clamps you get off the Bay.

Then the lid may not be strong enough to carry the weight of the column that you have to build. You could strengthen the lid, by adding a plate on the inside but this means more work for you.

The element is big enough, I would run it through a controller, and yes you would have to bypass the thermo.

I don’t mind doing a bit of modding especially as these urns can be found a lot cheaper than a keg boiler.

So just wire the element directly to the power supply via the controller?

yes.

Wire the element to the plug (so you bypass the stat).
Then you plug it into the controller.
And if you want better still plug that into an energy monitor.

Then you can note done the numbers and btter understand and repeat.

MIGHT be worth going over to YouTube and looking for David Heath's latest video where he compares GF, BM and Bulldog.

New up today - I generally find him worthwhile viewing and very helpful/knowledgeable. Professional brewer so he know's his beans.....

Defo worth a watch. But jeez you need some matches to keep your eyes open.

I have one of those, got it 2nd hand, and believe me, the lid is definitely strong enough to support a column. I just use mine as a sort of mash tun at the moment, but I'm sure it would make a great boiler for a still in the future. For a seal, I looked at PTFE tubing. The lid is a nice tight fit into the body and should be quite easily sealed.

Could work but the lid is already a decent fit so I think a few wraps of PTFE and a few toggle latches should do the job. I did notice the lid has a little vent in it which will need sealing.
