Cloudy spirit after filtering

Postby mikew41 » Sun Sep 20, 2015 11:10 am

I have been using the Still Spirit large filter recently and the results are good. It takes about 20 hours to put a full 9 litre 40% batch through. Just put one through last night and this morning the filtered spirit seems to be a little cloudy...nothing much just a sort of grey haze to it....

Any ideas?

Back the truck up a little... :)

1..We take it that the spirit you put in was ok to begin with??

2..What water did you use?

3..Could it be the filter ?? What's the filter medium?? carbon?? if so when was it changed?

Distilled or RO water is best used for dilution to drinking proof.

4..Does it taste ok??

I've done this a few times before and it's always turned out OK....I didn't vary the method at all.

1..We take it that the spirit you put in was ok to begin with?? Yep, looked clear as a bell

2..What water did you use? Tap water. I know people recommend bottled but our tap water is pretty good.

3..Could it be the filter ?? What's the filter medium?? carbon?? if so when was it changed? It's the standard Still Spirit carbon tube thing. Use a new one every time.

Distilled or RO water is best used for dilution to drinking proof.

4..Does it taste ok?? Yes, it tastes fine.

Cheers,
Mike

My mate told me never to use tap water for cutting down, he said it'll go cloudy.

Bet it's that?

As you use a new carbon tube every time, I would suspect that the latest did not get cleaned properly during manufacturing and some carbon dust remained. You could try running dripping it though some compressed cotton wool, e.g. stuffed in the neck of a funnel. The capillary action might leave the dust behind in the cotton wool.

I've just used some to make up a bottle of Calvados, added the essence to the seemingly hazy spirit and the bottle has come out lovely and clear.....looks great.

Very odd, but may be the water is a bit dicky after all.
