Only been learning a few years, and I've never seen an Airstill nor a T500 yet.
Also working with scrap copper and stainless steel helps me understand what's happening inside there.
And it's so much cheaper to make my own stills

I've been building the back of my house this past year, wife gets her kitchen conservatory and I get a still house or man cave. Happily married at last!

Heck! I just realised where I am. I seem to have wandered onto a forum of really cool guys with a shared interest in automatic kettle stills.

Welcome to the forum, so this will be your first Still Build then I guess, you can get hold of 50lt milk cans from StillDragon Europe, based in Austria, lots of us have ordered stuff from them, it's a little pricy but very good quality.

Or if you've got access to any local welders, you can save a small fortune buy buying a 50lt beer keg and having the fittings you want for the heating elements and column connection welded on.

That's what I did, bought a brand new keg, and had tri-clamp ferrules for the connections welded on to it, probably half the cost of a Milk Can Setup.

Many thanks Anavarin,I have had a look at that site,I see they sell the one element model but not twin,I was thinking about heat up times and more control over temperatures,do you use a controller on your
Equipment?,my decision for milk can was purely on aesthetics,to complement the planned rig ahead.

I have one single 3KW element in my keg, it takes about 45mins to heat up 40 litres of wash, I'm pretty sure you can get 4kw or even higher versions if your supply could handle it, I must admit I do like the look of the milk cans, but I don't think you would need two elements for a 50 litre boiler.

It would probably be cheaper and give much better flexibility to use one large element and buy or build a power controller.

What size column are you thinking of? If 2" - 3" then 3KW will be fine, even with a 4" column, if it only has a few perf plates or bubble cap plates.

But if you want 4" with pro-cap plates and a large packed section, you will need more power, maybe 4KW-5KW.

Definitely 4" as I have started to collect
The parts for that size, I'm hoping to use both bubble caps and also have perf plates to swap out just to see what's best,but I know there can be issues with plates and drive power, hence the Duel element setup.

What in your advice would be the best connection ferrule size for a 50lt? 2-4" or straight 4-4"?

I've been also thinking about a 30lt keg
As boiler for 25lt wash, do you think this
Would allow enough head space? Also what connection for this size of boiler or does it not matter?

Column size I'd love to shoot for 6 plate
But being modular I could add to this later
Not decided if I'd like to go for dash or
Crystal yet still early days.

I'd like to use boiler for reflux configuration and pot configuration for stripping and also product with a bit of flavour

Im Lucius 38yo male from The Netherlands.

First off let me start by apologising for any grammar misstakes i may make in my writings. i know my English is far from perfect.
I have recently obtained a SmartStill Mark II and i'm basically here to learn how to use the thing!

Im reading through some of this stuff as we speak but i felt you guys took a lot of time to build this gem of a website so i had to come in and introduce myself.

Hi all,

Another Airstill newbie here. Joined the other day and getting to grips with my first batch of hooch. Like what I have seen and read so far, and yes I made sure I downloaded and read the Airstill-Brief PDF.

Hope to pick up lots of good advice, tips and recipes and currently working on my first Sputnik, qdos to Mash for that one.
