Hi all
I guess this has been asked many a time but .....
As previous posts falling in love with Vodka star yeast but.... Do like SS classic fast and 8kg no bother good yield so has anyone ran it without liquid carbon ? Sick of black gunge !

Oh well in the absence of any comments adverse or otherwise and having spotted an earlier post which seemed positive just pitched SS classic yeast into an 8kg wash without carbon and I will let you know how it goes

Hi there over on the home distiller site they advise splitting all the ingrediants for this wash in half and use two fermenting buckets. the yield of a single 8kg ferment will produce 25 lts@18 abv using two 4kg ferments you will get 50 lts@9abv but the yeast will have been stress free wich will produce a cleaner brew and also you get to use the t500 twice

cheers bill... well up to now, i like the vs as it seems the cleanest so far..

il distil it tomorrow and see what the final product is like compared to a classic wash.

Imho the cleanest turbo is the Essencia super 6 but each to there own.I have used the vs with success but i only used 5.5 kg sugar and got an abv of 12.5

I tried SS triple distilled with 8kg but it stalled at about 1.000 so no gain in yield
the classic ferments out on 8 kg to under 990 and giving 18% ish and seems to come off quite clean on the T500 certainly nothing a couple of filter passes can't handle
What zero liquid carbon will do I will let you know
I suspect VS would ferment ok at maybe 7kg as I found the triple distilled to do so may try this next wash

All I can say is that 8 kg in classic has worked consistently for me with no bad side effects
Not about cheap more efficient yield and experimenting. It is a hobby after all.

I have a couple of SS Triples to use before I go back to Wineos Simple Sugar Wash. I put on a wash using 6.75 kg of dextrose in 35 liters of water which should dial in at 10% keeping the yeasties happy. Since I had it, I added the SS carbon. It's fermenting nicely and smells quite clean for a change.

This is the maiden ferment for my new plastic inductor turned conical fermenter. I'm not looking forward to cleaning the black residue. For my last SS Triple, I'll skip the carbon and see how it compares.

Well fermented down to just under 1.000 very little smell
Looked like lime cordial !
Running now but in mho it doesn't taste very clean
However will give a couple of passes through z filter and see how it goes
Also just discovered the fine chap at my local HBS is not only a judge but possesses an analyser/spectrometer which he wants to run one of my diluted and filtered vodka star through so will see if I can persuade him to analyse this wash and a previous carbon classic too
Will report back !

That's very interesting - I have been pondering a bit of testing so we can prove a few things once and for all, the plastics debate being one of them, but it would also be interesting to check homemade product against commercial, etc. Problem is that testing isn't cheap, let me know what your chap is able to do and what the results are, if he can afford it then maybe I can too!

My 35 liter SS Triple wash plus carbon turned out quite clean. This was a first for me even with pumping it through a coarse wine filter pad. The next SS Triple will be without carbon. Both will be a 10% wash.

I got the idea from http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/super-simple-15g-plastic-conical-276378/.

It is much cheaper than stainless steel. I did buy sanitary fittings, however. I also make all grain beer, wine and mead. Wanting to simplify and reduce steps led me in this direction.

For example, I am not limited to making batches of beer to fit in a 19 to 23 liter carboy. I don't have to rack.

I am really interested in doing quality over quantity. That said, I am really pleased by the clean smelling 10% SS Triple wash. I will have to do more research on the carbon requirement. I hope to avoid using it next time.

Full drain models are preferred. A 1 inch female drain opening will be more susceptible to plugging up. Mine is 1.5 inch. The yeast dump comes out slowly. But, one must be vigilant to close the butterfly valve before the liquid gushes out.

Dumping yeast may be required if the yeast sediment is at or above the rack port.
