Spirit Filtering

Someone asked if I would post some pics of what I use to filter my Whisky after it's removed from the Oak and ready for bottling.

I tried the coffee filters but found they did a good job but were too time consuming so I came up with a faster alternative.

My filter uses two filter materials, BP grade Cotton Wool Roll and Surgical Gauze...


...the Cotton Wool comes in a roll of two layers which can be separated and cut to size. The Gauze is a 10cm X 10cm size and I use one piece on either side of the cotton wool like this...



Next I get my SS Funnel and bottling stand and place a small piece of SS Scrubber in the funnel like so...



Then I place the filter material into the funnel and press into shape.


The SS Scrubber lifts the filter materials off the floor of the funnel and allows the the Spirits to be filtered by a larger area of the filter materials. I found that without the scrubber the spirits were channeled to an area the size if the exit spout of the funnel and any dust would gather there and quickly clog and slow the filter. This way that never happens

Then you simply pour and each bottle will take no more than 1 minute to produce crystal clean, sparklingly clear spirits.


When my Whisky is ready I transfer it to a storage keg until it's full and filter a 19lt batch all at once. I use one of these filters is good for the 19lt batch and the last bottle is as clean and sparkling as the first.

Finally, the cotton wool does soak up a good bit of Whisky and this is simply squeezed into a jug and returned to the current batch on Oak so there's no loss

Anyway that's it, my way to sparklingly clean finished spirits
