Turbo Yeast result query
Hello all. I am currently saving my pennies for a still but until that time arises, I have some questions on using a turbo yeast (like Alcotec 48) to produce some 20% alcohol namely :-
a.) If I add a flavouring (say Top Shelf Whisky) to the 20% liquid and only use for mixing would it taste OK ?
b.) Will the stuff keep as it is only 20% volume ?
c.) Could I use glycerine to make it \'coat\' the glass ?
I\'ve worked out that I can keep the cost down to about £3.05 a bottle, including doubling the price due to having to use twice the liquid in the drink due to lower strength.

There\'s no technical reason why you can\'t do this - in effect, you\'re just making wine but only using sugar instead of fruit. That doesn\'t mean you\'ll get a tasteless alcohol though, especially using a turbo yeast which is really designed to be distilled. I\'ve heard a few people say they\'ve used these \'vodka from a bucket without distilling\' type kits, and that they\'ve had wicked hangovers from them which doesn\'t bode well for the purity.
As far as keeping it, I\'d imagine the same rules apply as would do to wine.
It\'ll get you drunk, but I wouldn\'t recommend it - for my tuppence worth, you\'d be better off making wine from a kit or from scratch, it\'ll taste better and once you get your still you can make brandy with any leftovers!

hi stepheng98,
hello and welcome to the best thing on the internet. totally agree with jimmy here, turbo yeasts do produce some nasty stuff which we remove by distilling AND carbon filtering, if you were to drink it with this stuff in im sure it wouldnt taste too good and would probably make you feel ill. much better to make your own wine and beer in the meantime, some of us do both. besides once you\'ve got your still and are producing you will be desperate to get the next best thing, i daydream about the t500, its never ending.
cheers, hoppin

I have been using Turbo heat wave and I siphon into the still by a tube with me sucking on the other end (not idea but better then poring until I get a better method) and accidently got a mouth full of the wash...not pleasant at all. If short on cash I would get a air still off ebay (or off hoppin when he off loads his birthday present and upgrades to the T500). Love my T500....better than borrowing a mates all the time.
