Where can I get cheap sugar?

Postby Voddy » Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:13 pm

AS we all know, supermarkets are horrendously expensive for sugar.

Wholesaler's are not much cheaper - about 25-33%; but I s'pose that's better than a kick in the shins....

Presently my sugar is costing 66.7p per kilo at Bookers. What's yours and where from, please?

Voddy,

66.7p a Kilo looks very cheap. But am I comparing eggs with eggs?

The wholesalers I have access to quotes a similar price but one which excludes VAT.

If that is a similar price to yours then 66.7p +20% VAT = 81.6p

My local super markets usually sell at 85p. Occasionally on a special or when one have them has 5kg bags I can get it for 80p.

Let us know if the price you quote includes VAT.

Locally to me Farm Foods and Aldi have sugar at 75p/KG.
Most others are 85p.
The local Tesco recently slashed the price to just over 90P....................

I use a lot of what most people would consider a low quality brown sugar. It is loaded with molasses, which is what I want. I get it for RMB 6 per kilo in 50K bags.

The point I am making is that I calculate things out to about 1 Kg gives me 1 Lt of final product. Sounds pretty cheap to me.

Cachaca costs me RMB 24 (about US$6) per can of Lyles Golden Syrup. That's getting a bit high - but worth it.

Bee-Keepers use a lot of sugar and I occasionally have a look on there sites to see if there are any cheap deals around, they never is but some of the topics are interesting.

One of the guys uses this method to get cheap sugar.

Take one plastic 90lb bucket, preferably white, into your local supermarket, mine's an Aldi.

Ask to see the manager and offer to buy from him any sugar bags that get damaged or split, tell him to call you when the bucket is nearly full and you will come and weigh the bucket on your bathroom scales and pay him 50% of the current price per kilo.

I know you will stress how important it is that only sugar gets into the bucket and not soap powder!

Don't be put off if he says no, the next manager will say yes and I know you will cement the deal with a jar of honey. We operate this system throughout the Black Country and find the problem is getting enough bins to store the stuff in

It may be worth a go!

Supermarkets put a huge squeeze on suppliers for the lowest prices. I doubt you'll find cheaper than the cheapest supermarket.

Thanks for all the replies; I'll re-read them all right now.

Just as a polite note: the sugar is also used to make jams of which I made 120 x 1kilo jars and this is my yearly amount.

YHB - All food is charged VAT; however, some is charged VAT at 0% - and sugar is in this category. I got the sugar in payment of a case of my jams.

I pay £3.99 for a 5kg bag of white sugar from stresco
Or 99p per kg for natural unrefined sugar from the 99p store. It smells freakin lovely!

Is it worth having a regular 'newsticker' type thing for the latest sugar prices?

If there were a lot of folks interested we could do a mass purchase of panela (evaporated cane syrup) directly from SugarDaddy in Columbia.

Downside is that a pallet - about 2000 lbs (40 x 50 lb bags)- costs roughly $1500

But that is just 46p per lb. Certified organic raw cane sugar. ;)

2.2 lbs per kilo. So 46p times 2.2 = £1.01.
