Sourcing activated carbon?

Postby Mark1 » Wed Aug 04, 2010 7:03 pm

Hi all, I am a newbie to the hobby and the site. I wonder if anyone knows of a source for suitable carbon in the UK to make my own filter unit? I understand that fish tank carbon is a no no and the thought of having to keep buying tea bags of the stuff is not appealing. Any advice would be nice, I dont want to end up buying the wrong stuff. Thanks.

Sourcing activated carbon?

Hi Mark1,

A simple Google search will give you lots of hits for \'activated carbon\'

But in the UK you might begin by looking at \'thebrewshopuk\'

Fish are very particular in their choice of water, so don\'t buy their carbon. They do not live in alchohol. Neither do we -- well, some of us might!

Yes, they\'re very helpful there, I\'ve used them for a couple of things......
recommended.....
Oh and isn\'t it referred to as "distillers carbon"? If you just tell them it\'s to put into a "Z" filter, then they\'ll know what\'s needed (as opposed to the liquid activated carbon that goes in the wash)..............

Hi Andy, probably nothing wrong with aquarium activated carbon, but I believe it comes in variable quality! The fine stuff ie. \'Red Sea\' brand costs £40 a Kilo compared with \'Alcotec\' carbon at £6 a Kilo.
