Wash hasn't cleared

Postby Kck74 » Fri Sep 15, 2017 9:03 am

Hi all,

I've now used 2 lots of turbo clear after degassing
and it's still not cleared (bog standard wash as per
instructions with kit)

Can I just run it, it needs to be, it's been sitting there 2 weeks now.

Cheers

Sorry, your use of the term kit threw me.

If we are talking a simple sugar wash, the only thing that can be in suspension is yeast cells. Given a cool temperature it really should drop clear without a problem.

The use of the term kit suggests you might have something else in there.

Did your hydrometer reading indicate it had fermented out completely

It doesn't need to be crystal clear for distilling.

Your wash doesn't need to clear completely,
but product is usually much better if it does.
Boiler clean up is easier too!

Ok thank you, I'm going for it. I'm in Perth WA, so cool conditions
Shouldn't be a problem causing suspension yes? It's been mid 20's
Here all week.
Well I'm gonna run it now anyway, the wife's in need of some GnT!

Cheers

Waiting, may produce better, but not waiting will be OK, if you pay attention to cuts.
Hope your good lady is pleased by your efforts.

Are you sure it's finished fermentation. If so give it a go. It doesn't have to be "see thru" but it shouldn't be "mud" either

I'm guessing that with temps. in the mid 20's and two weeks waiting for the brew to clear, the yeast just don't want to play anymore.
It may be stuck.
It may be a Ph thing.
It may something else.

I would run it, accept any lost expected alcohol and get another brew going soon as possible.
Maybe not a Turbo next time?

Well it was run and put the essences in, as per my plan for this wash.
Mrs is happy (thank god) but might use bakers yeast next
time as per my mates thoughts.

It was my first crack at it, so still a lot to learn

Cheers

For a neutral read up on here on sugar washes with bakers yeast using kale, or lentils, as the nutrient.

Myself, for my gin runs I have found the Kale fed wash very good with little flavour to carry over into the final gin.
