Just a thought..

A little bit of digging leads me to believe that the site is hosted at Hostgator. They have a live chat facility that can be got at here: https://www.hostgator.com/contact

It occurs to me that as the global moderator role has to be granted by site admin, a global moderator might be able to secure technical assistance, given the circumstances, as by definition of the role an authority has been conferred by site admin.

Pushing this notion a bit further, they might then be able to upgrade the relevant component for the site, and even (pushing this about as far as I can without it falling off a cliff) enter discussion regarding the site's future if indeed the current site admin is MIA. Although I assume the hosting is still being paid for, at least for now.

I may be talking out of the wrong end of my alimentary canal, but I guess it's better to try and fail than simply roll over and croak!

Cheers

I would hope that the DC hosters integrity and professional standards would not allow ANY access to change ANYTHING with out the owners permission. MIA is unfortunately irrelevant.

Plus the fact it is holiday season. Jimmy will probably rock up soon with a tan as dark as grandma's coal cellar.

Might be better to try and find him and have a chat about this issue and futures.

All that said I do like your thinking and I live in hope for a bright future.

Is it somehow worth putting an email list together? Then if it all goes dark we can at least newsletter/keep in touch? I may have mentioned this a another thread :D but Robert might have some tools for this already?
The most powerful tool in my armoury is the ability to edit posts,as done here for clarity, hope you don't mind mash.
I don't have to do so in colour, but like all to see if I have added a missing word to a hastily written post.
Robert.

Oops. Cheers Robert.
Just thought a splash of blue might be nice 8)
Cheers

I got locked out around April because I fumbled entering my password, then forgot which one I'd used, and 3 login failures led to the Captcha challenge which as you know is now deprecated.

I sent a message to admin 16 April and got a quick reply from Jimmy saying sorry and he'll fix the forum when he gets around to it.

He reset my password but that didn't work - the system had remembered my failed logins and still wanted a Captcha challenge even with the new password.

I don't know why but yesterday whilst reading the forum I pressed the automatic "request new password" and for some reason this new password has let me in. I guess that the 3-failed-login block maybe expires after a few months?

It's a shame because it only looks like an hour's work to upgrade, but without the site owner available I can't see there's anyway to fix it...
