Mason Jars

Postby Still Brewing » Fri Jul 31, 2015 7:19 pm

I see that a few of you use Mason jars to collect spirit and do your cuts. I managed to pick 10 500ml ones up yesterday from Home Bargains for 59p each and have a question about their use.

I see that when you air the spirit you take out the middles of the caps and have some sort of screening put in to keep the bugs out. What do you use.

Cheers

Something to keep the insects out. Cheese cloth, paper towels from the kitchen, a thin tea towel, coffee filters and other similar things work well.

I use medical swabs, they're about 10cm square but are folded up 4 times, I unfold them and cut them into 4, one pack goes a long way :)

I can only find the 1000ml screw-tops on their site..http://www.homebargains.co.uk/products/ ... of-12.aspx at £11-98 for a box of 12

They also show the 500ml ones... they are the clip type at the same price....still a great find cheers SB..

No problem Icefever

While in store yesterday I seem to remember the 1 litre jars been much cheaper than that. Don't know if its a local store offer but there always seems to be loads in stock.

I am with you Robert. I use sharpie & heads.

I came across in jars that had been painted with blackboard paint the other day(a small square – not entirely)

What a good idea I thought the Demi Johns.
