In the days that I used to work in the South and squeeze a French shopping trip in each trip away, maybe 8 years ago now, I did find that, away from the hypermarkets built for tourist shoppers, I could, with care, buy GOOD wines for less than £2 a bottle.
Very Occasionally, a Vin de Table for less.
There are inherent dangers in buying cheap booze :)

I use fresh grapes (bought in) and modern winemaking techniques. I have not costed it recently but I am sure it is not much over £1 per bottle.

Whether it is beer, wine or spirits the savings, health benefits and flavours are phenomenal with hand made.
