Never forget the bits of copper in the bottom of a still that isn't. It helps. Just sayin'

I've never used a conditioner, oil or copper and only burped once on a rum strip, is it really needed? It may be as I run 25L in a 50L boiler.

I think you answered you own question there It burped.
Copper acts to control the boil by stopping surges caused by super-heating. It is also reacts to reduce sulphur.
IMO its MANDATORY in smart stills and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in others (particular if they burp). The size vs volume equation is not relevant to super-heating.

Copper coins very good. Also just a tsp of oil. I have no problems so not going to fix. All I wanted to point out is that you do not have to buy expensive conditioner, there are cheaper ways.
