Fresh bakers yeast

Postby H12rpo » Fri Aug 11, 2017 10:11 pm

Up until now I've been using allinsons (50g per 25 litre kale wash). Those of you using fresh crumbly type bakers yeast.....how much for a 25 litre wash ?
Also any noticeable difference between that and the dried active type? If not I won't bother :)

The noticeable difference is.. It's fresh and does not keep well.

Good for nuetral. Cut into 50g lumps. One per wash. Freezing is only short term for storage.

Get Fermipan instead.

Who needs turbo yeast. Bread yeast is about 50p
per wash. These turbo wash packs are £6.99.
I can buy 7 tubs of Allinsons for that.
In fact we can do 7 kale washes for the price
of 3 x Turbo triples.

I have to agree with "who needs turbo's."
My latest Yellow split pea washes are ready to rack tomorrow, or later today now, after 6 days fermenting.
Another couple of days to stripping.
Fast enough for me, and slightly alcoholic bits for the chucks to breakfast upon.
One of these days I may be tempted to try a brassica wash, but only because the purple sprouted broccoli is growing in a demented way.
A brassica leaf is a brassica leaf where I live.

Back to the OP.
If you have a cheap source of fresh yeast, use it.
If you can source a dried yeast for less, use that.
Simples.

Ok no difference then it seems. I'm probably going to use the fermipan for bulk purchase.
As regards 'turbo' yeast ....I've no intention of trying that having heard negatives about it (not to mention the price) but it got me thinking what is it???
As best as can determine its bakers(brewers) yeast with an added nutrient and D.a.p. Anyone got any further info about its constitution?

Nope. A different strain of saccharomyces cerevisiae. Cultured for its high alcohol tolerance.
